Laser Therapy is an excellent treatment that is often utilized to treat a wide array of conditions and pain. This therapy allows the body to naturally heal itself by utilizing a combination of electric stimulation and cold laser technology. This low level laser therapy consists of a light-emitting device that can be utilized on many different parts of the body.

In addition to simple back and neck pain, cold laser therapy has been utilized for a number of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, tendonitis and sprains. The number of conditions that have been notably increased in the usage of this therapy include carpal tunnel syndrome, wound management, shoulder and neck injuries, muscle and joint pain, as well as a long list of others. How does laser therapy work?

When you become injured, cells become damaged. They no longer function in the way they are supposed to. When this laser light is placed over these injured cells, it sends a stimulated light at a special wavelength into the affected area. This healing light produces a cascade of healing responses in your body. Cells become energized, healing improves, blood supply gets better, swelling is reduced, and nerve conduction is slowed for immediate and long lasting relief of pain.

The Class IV (Hot Laser) can penetrate deeply into the body’s tissue. In fact, the lasers we use in our clinic can also be used effectively on animals like horses with incredible deep healing effects. It can penetrate 6 to 9 inches deep to signal your damaged cells to start producing more energy.

How do I know laser will work?

No treatment works for everyone, but more than 2,500 peer-reviewed, published scientific studies have been written on laser therapy on a variety of conditions. These studies can be found in the National Library of Medicine. The lists of documented mechanisms and effects in laser treated tissue is extensive. They have demonstrated that Lasers: promote tissue repair, improve wound healing, reduce pain, reduce scar tissue, improve range of motion and provide faster and better quality (stronger tissues) of healing to injured areas. With further research, a more complete understanding of this exciting technology will emerge. The class IV lasers, like we use here at Healthworx, are the most powerful and advanced of the lasers.

Class IV lasers have shown a remarkable success rate in treating a variety of conditions. Acute injuries react the most quickly to treatment. Chronic conditions take longer to react, but often laser will be successful when other treatments were not.

During each painless laser treatment new cellular growth is achieved. Repairing damaged tissue allows the area to function more normally without spasm, stiffness and pain. Once function is restored to the region – pain is relieved as the injured area returns to homeostasis.

Who typically uses the laser in a clinical setting?

There seem to be more and more clinics utilizing high powered class IV lasers popping up all the time. (general practitioners, chiropractic clinics, physical therapists, sports physiologists, etc.) In addition to these clinics, there are approximately 35-40 major league teams (NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB) that are effectively using class IV lasers on their athletes to help them return to the playing field in a timely manner. Professional jockeys and the horses they ride have all benefited from these high powered lasers as well to remove scar tissue and boost performance.

How long does a treatment take?

It depends upon the area being treated, the size of the area, and how long you’ve had the problem. A toe, for instance, may only take a minute or so – but a hip, low back, knee, shoulder or other large area may take 6-14 minutes. Even though the treatments take only a few minutes, the therapeutic effects will continue to work for you long after you leave the office.

Is the treatment going to hurt?

No, this type of laser treatment is painless. You will feel a warmth coming from the laser head, but no discomfort or pain. Most people feel improvement with the very first treatment. Sharp, shooting pain eventually turns to soreness and then tends to disappear altogether.

When will I start to feel better?

Everyone responds differently to care. The recovery time will vary depending on the amount of nerve damage and spinal decay, but most patients feel better after their first visit.

Why am I just now hearing about the Class IV laser therapy?

Class IV laser therapy is a relatively new technology in the United States. Even though laser units have been used in other countries for years, Class III therapy units were only just cleared in the United States in 2002. The use of these class III lasers, however have been limited because of their low power.

In 2005, the FDA approved the Class IV therapeutic laser. Since then, the scientific documented research studies have been rapidly emerging. Acceptance has also been rapid on the rehabilitation, wound care and sports medicine programs. Recent beta testing and protocol development has been in the works with several practitioners across the world to disseminate this information about this technology.

How many treatments do I need?

Typically, the more chronic your condition is, the more treatments you need. If your injury or ailment is more acute, and occurring within the last 6-8 weeks, you may see significant reduction in pain and swelling in only a couple of treatments and may only need 2 to 4 treatments total. If you have been suffering for years, it may take a few treatments before you can tell if it is able to help and you may need 12-15 treatments initially and then maintenance.

Our office is one of the few private health clinics in the United States today that offers both an 810 nm and 980 nm class IV lasers. These high powered class IV lasers have been proven to provide amazing results (90% success rate) in treating neuromusculoskeletal problems.
